Emotional Regulation & Big Feelings.

Emotional regulation coaching for children offers a warm, developmental space for big feelings and emotional understanding. When overwhelm takes over, Ruby and your child explore what is happening and build practical strategies that fit the individual child. Sessions in North London and online support self-understanding and steadier ways to respond, without treating feelings as something to be fixed.

Built around your child, not a fixed package.

Every programme is built around the individual child. Ruby and your child shape the focus, the pace and the goals, so the support fits your child, not the other way around.

Programmes run from a minimum of four sessions, and continue for as long as your child needs. Some children need a short, focused block; others benefit from longer, ongoing support. Ruby and the family find the right length together.

The process

How it works

  1. 01It starts with a free discovery call, where Ruby talks through what is going on for your child and what you are hoping for.
  2. 02From there, Ruby builds a programme around your child's goals, strengths and needs.
  3. 03Programmes begin with a minimum of four sessions and continue for as long as they are helpful, with regular reviews along the way.

Who it's for

  • Children who feel things very strongly and very quickly
  • Children who find frustration or disappointment hard to move past
  • Children who get overwhelmed by busy or noisy days
  • Children who hold it together at school and let go at home
  • Children who want words for what they are feeling
  • Children building calm before a demanding term or change

How Ruby approaches it

  • Understanding when the big moments happen, and what sits underneath them
  • Building emotional vocabulary, so feelings can be named rather than acted out
  • Practical, personal strategies for finding calm in the moment
  • Noticing early signs, so a wave can be met before it breaks
  • Rebuilding after a hard moment, without shame
  • Skills your child can use on their own, at school and at home

What Ruby and your child work towards

Every child is different, but this is the kind of growth Ruby and your child work towards together.

Understanding their feelings better
Finding calm when things feel too big
Fewer overwhelming moments
Words for what they are feeling
Steadier responses to frustration
Feeling more in control of big emotions

What emotional regulation coaching involves

Emotional regulation is the ability to notice a feeling, understand it, and respond to it in a way that works for you. For many children, the difficulty is not the feeling itself but how quickly and how strongly it arrives, and how little time there seems to be between the feeling and the reaction. Coaching helps a child recognise the early signs of frustration, worry or overwhelm, find words for what is happening, and build strategies for finding calm that genuinely suit them.

Ruby and your child also spend time on what happens afterwards, so a hard moment can be repaired without shame. Feelings are not treated as a problem to remove. The aim is that your child understands themselves better and has more choice about how they respond. Coaching is not therapy or clinical treatment, and where a child needs that kind of support Ruby will say so.

This is part of Ruby’s approach and her way of working with every child. Read more about the approach.

Frequently asked questions

Is this therapy or counselling?

No. This is educational, psychology-informed coaching. It is not therapy or counselling, and it is not a substitute for clinical support.

What ages is this suitable for?

Programmes are designed for children and young people aged 7 to 18, with sessions adapted to the child's age, confidence, and context.

Is this therapy for my child's emotions?

No. This is coaching that builds emotional skills and understanding. It is not therapy, treatment or assessment for a mental health condition. If Ruby believes a child would benefit from clinical support, she will always say so.

What happens on the discovery call?

The free discovery call is a chance for Ruby to understand what is going on for your child, answer your questions, and decide together whether coaching feels like a good fit.

How many sessions will my child need?

Programmes begin with a minimum of four sessions and continue for as long as your child needs. Some children need a short, focused block, while others benefit from longer support. Ruby and the family review together as sessions progress.
