Ruby ColeTUITION & COACHING

Academic tuition or coaching, what does my child actually need?

In short: Tuition tends to fit best for academic gaps, coaching tends to fit best for confidence, friendships or motivation, and many children benefit from a blend of both.

Parents often come to this question from two directions, either a child who's behind or anxious academically, or a child who's struggling socially or emotionally in a way that's starting to affect school.

Tuition tends to be the right starting point when the core issue is academic, such as gaps in a subject, exam preparation, or keeping pace with a curriculum. Coaching tends to fit better when the core issue is more about confidence, friendships, motivation, or coping with a change, even if it's showing up as slipping grades.

A useful rough test is this.

  • If fixing the academic gap alone would solve the problem, tuition is probably enough
  • If the academic gap seems to be a symptom of something else, such as anxiety or low confidence, coaching alongside or instead of tuition is worth considering

Common questions

How do I know if my child needs a tutor or a coach?

If the main issue is falling behind in a subject, tuition is usually the right starting point. If the issue is more about confidence, friendships or motivation, coaching tends to fit better, even if it's showing up as grades slipping.

Can tuition and coaching be combined?

Yes, this is common, and a blended approach can be built around exactly what a specific child needs rather than choosing one over the other.

The Build Your Own approach exists for exactly this overlap, taking a holistic view of a child and blending both in whatever proportion actually fits them, rather than making a family choose one lane upfront.
